A medium would have worked, but it would not have left any room to move, so the large is perfect for bulky clothing underneath. It's not terribly heavy either which is a plus. I want to give this jacket 5 stars, but it has a couple of big flaws that prevent that. I do love the jacket. It feels fairly warm for me (so its probably toasty for a normal person) but it does not feel very windproof and the fabric cannot be completely waterproof. So this cannot be a daily wear jacket like I had really hoped. It does fit good and I like that the sleeves are long enough for me (which never happens). The inner lining is also a bot rough along the seams but it does not affect how it feels when I wear it.
